The Sessions Woods Conservation Education Center Public Program Series
The Sessions Woods Conservation Education Center’s Public Program Series is a cooperative venture between the CT DEP Wildlife Division and the Friends of Sessions Woods. Please pre-register for these programs by calling 860-675-8130 (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Programs are free unless noted. An adult must accompany children under 12 years old. No pets allowed!

October 19, 2008 (Sunday), from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Orienteering Event

October 5, 2008 (Sunday), at 8:00 a.m. Fall Bird Walk
Burlington resident and bird enthusiast Laura Spitz will lead this bird walk suitable for all levels of bird watching ability! Laura will guide participants to several habitats at Sessions Woods for the opportunity to see a diversity of birds. She also will provide bird identification tips and suggestions for bird watching field guides. The 2-mile bird walk will begin at the flag pole in front of the Sessions Woods Conservation Education Center. Participants should bring binoculars and wear appropriate shoes for hiking.
October 19, 2008 (Sunday), from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Orienteering Event
Orienteering is an activity for all ages! It involves using a map and compass to find your way to each of several checkpoints on an orienteering course. The Western Connecticut Orienteering Club (WCOC) will be hosting this orienteering event on the trails at Sessions Woods. Participants can register and begin any time between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. but must complete the course by 2:00 p.m. Beginners are welcome to arrive early for additional instructions on orienteering basics. The cost is $5.00 per person or $12 per family. Pre-registration is not required and additional information can be obtained by emailing WCOC club member Jim Henderson at bandjhenderson@sbcglobal.net.
November 2, 2008 (Sunday), at 2:00 p.m. Fall Hike
Join Connecticut DEP Wildlife Division Natural Resource Educator Laura Rogers-Castro on a 2-mile hike along the crosscut and beaver marsh trails at Sessions Woods. Laura will discuss the wildlife use of the various habitats that are visited along the way, in addition to describing the special features of the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area. Participants should wear appropriate shoes for hiking along a woodland trail and bring a water bottle. No pets are allowed. Please meet in the exhibit area of the Sessions Woods Conservation Education Center.
November 12, 2008 (Wednesday), at 6:30 p.m. An Update on Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases in Connecticut with Dr. Kirby Stafford
Dr. Kirby Stafford, of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, will be visiting Sessions Woods to provide an update on the black-legged tick, Lyme disease, other tick-borne illnesses, and tick management methods. Dr. Stafford is a medical-veterinary entomologist whose research focuses on the ecology and control of the tick, Ixodes scapularis, which transmits the agents of Lyme disease, human babesiosis, and human ehrlichiosis. This presentation will provide participants with the most current information available today to protect yourself from tick-borne illnesses.
